With a history spanning millennia—from the earliest glimmers of civilization to the modern country of today—Turkey offers travelers an enormous range of experiences. Within its lands, great empires rose and fell. Their ruins litter the landscape with an unparalleled archaeological heritage. The Anatolian peninsula is the cradle of the world’s three, great monotheist religions. Turkey is also a land of diverse natural contrasts. Fertile valleys are nestled beneath the gaze of spectacular, snow-capped mountain ranges. An extensive, sun-drenched coastline holds hidden azure coves and pristine beaches, attracting year-round tourists from all over the world. But it is Turkey’s people that will win your heart. Turks are an exceedingly polite, warm-hearted, family-oriented people. Just as their country spans both Europe and Asia, they too bridge the divide between modern and traditional, looking westward from their Central Asian roots. Land of the Turks captures the essence of the people, the land, and their history as viewed through the eyes and heart of a professional American photographer and writer. Through its pages, you will experience not only the beauty and complexity of this ancient land, but modern Turkey as well. You will come to better understand its rich culture and the warm hospitality of its people.

" After 3 extensive visits to Turkey, I thought I knew something about the country. However, my  own experience pales in comparison to the author of this book. He has captured the soul of Turkey with superb photos and a most informative text. A joy both to read and to look at."

Commissioned to produce a book of photographs on Turkey, professional photographer Dennis Jones spent a total of at least 70-day odyssey visiting touristic high-points across the country. A dream job for certain, and a responsibility he amply fulfilled with his collection of crisp photographs on this fascinating country: Land of Turks: Journeying through a Land of History and Hospitality.

His camera captures more than famous sights however, as he depicts the history, customs, traditions and faith behind the objects on the other side of his lens. Jones excels in spectacular wide-angle shots, as if he is trying to tell us that he needs so much more than a single frame to relate what he is seeing. The photos are well-composed and shot with respect.

A gentle text accompanies the photos, describing his encounters along the way and weaving background information on Turkish history and culture. We are treated to more than a travelogue in this book, for Jones visited not only famous sites, but modest homes and earnest schools as well. Although Jones favors sights to people in his photographs, my favorite shots in the book are the touching ones he took of everyday folk, such as the elderly woman chopping firewood in Cappadocia, the carriage driver hugging the neck of his beloved horse or the young man in Erzurum toting a cabbage that probably weighed as much as he did – because even though Turkey is a country full of amazing scenery – so skillfully captured in the photographs of Jones – it is always the faces of hospitable Turks that are the most lasting memories of any trip to this ancient and modern country.
